The juniper is an evergreen tree that is native to Europe, Asia, and the northern parts of North America. They produces tiny pine cones sometimes called berries. Juniper berries have a pungent, pine like flavor. They are used to spice up many cuisines. This includes European and Indian recipes and some game dishes. The berries are used whole, ground, or rubbed through a sieve. Wait until just before use to crush, ground, or rub through a sieve. This will help to prevent the loss of the essential oils. Some species have POISONOUS fruits. You shouldn’t just go around eating any fruit you see without proper knowledge of the species.
